We are a boutique privately owned wine company located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Liquor Licence No. 36113720). Our wines are grown, cellared and bottled in Great Western, Victoria which is part of the Grampians wine region and is approximately 2.5 hours from Melbourne by car.
The wines are stored in specialized climate controlled wine storage facilities in Melbourne and may be shipped to anywhere in Australia.
The Grampians wine region is well regarded for red varieties of wine of which Hyde Park Wines has produced three vintages of Shiraz and one of Cabernet Merlot.
The climate of the Grampians region is of a Mediterranean type, the proximity to the Southern Ocean (between 100-200kms) providing a cooling influence during summer. Recognized as a cool climate grape growing region, the growing season in summer is characterized by warm to hot days, however, the nights are cool to cold. Autumn is mild and reliably produces the most pleasant weather perfect for ripening grapes in these most benign conditions.
Generally, the most sought after soils are red clay loams that run into shaley parent material. More specifically, the major geological type is from the Ordovician period consisting of mudstones and dolomite shales with reddish chocolate and red solodic soils, elsewhere soils consist of Devonian granites and rhyolites decomposed to form reddish sandy loams.
Shiraz and Riesling wines figure strongly followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and also Italian varietals such as Dolcetto and Sangiovese.
The pre-eminent wine of the Grampians region is Shiraz, punching well above its weight; it boasts four Shiraz wines in the Langton’s ‘Classification of Australian Wine’. According to James Halliday, the “style ranges from silky smooth, red cherry and plum through to strikingly concentrated wines strongly reminiscent of the Rhone Valley, redolent with spice, pepper, liquorice and game” (SWEP Wine Regions of Australia).
